Different versions and pronunciations of the family name.

The Lehmkuhl family name, in its different forms, is fairly common in Germany.
The following versions exist: Lehmkühl; Lehmkuhl; Lehmkuhler; Lehmkuhle; Lehmküehler; Lehmkuehler; Lehmkul; Lehmen; Lemrhuele; Lemen. One of the earliest references to this family name was that of Anna Lemekuele, from Münster, in 1580.
In the South African context only Lehmkühl, with an umlaut on the "u", and Lehmkuhl without the umlaut, exists.

Figure 1 is the signature of Anna Sophia Lehmkühl, wife of Frederick Daniël (a1b2c2), on the obituary[04] of their daughter, Anna Sophia, who died in the concentration camps at Norvalspont on 9 March 1901.
Figure 2 is the signature of Bolton Stretch Honeyborne Lehmkuhl (a1b10) on the marriage register[05] of his marriage to Anna Margarita Aletta Prinsloo on 3 November 1890.

Because the Lehmkuhls are a relatively small family and not so well known, one can find many "wrong" examples of the name. For example in the "Boer Army List" of the British army during the Anglo Boer War, there is a reference to C Lemphkul, "Implicated in murder of a native at Oudtshoorn on 26-9-01".
On my first electricity bill, my surname was spelt "Lehmkufie"!

The pronunciation of the family name even differs between the bearers thereof. Some pronunciations[06] are:
Lehmkuhl : [lɛm.kʊl]

Lehmkühl: [lɪˑǝm.kyːl]

or [lɪˑǝm.kœʏl]
